SACRAMENTO, CA - Morning fog reduced visibility to less than a quarter of a mile in much of the valley and toward the coast Monday morning. A Dense Fog Advisory was in effect until noon for the valley.

Visibility on roadways was below 100 feet in some locations including near Interstate 5 and the Sacramento International Airport about 6 Monday morning.

News10 traffic reporter Melissa Crowley reported CHP was running traffic breaks for a period. Nearby on I-5 traffic was backed up to the junction of 99/70. Visibility was well below 500 feet for most of the commute in Yolo and Sacramento counties as well as the Central Valley and toward the Bay Area. The California Highway Patrol reported fog on all Bay Area bridges.

News10 meteorologist Monica Woods said an inversion Monday morning with warmer air above colder air created the thick fog. Once the fog clears, there will be mostly sunny skies by afternoon. Highs will be in the low 60s.

Woods said the passage of a cold front later Monday and Tuesday should result in less fog Tuesday morning.

Winds will pick up in the Sierra later Monday as that front moves through Northern California.

During foggy conditions it's wise to keep speeds down, use low beams, avoid crossing traffic lanes and try your windshield wipers to clear any moisture.
